ActivityPub is a specification aimed at supporting free and open social media alternatives. When I first started working with ActivityPub, I found there was a lack of good introductory information about the specification and how to use it. To fill this need, I wrote a guide to help new implementers get up to speed with the ActivityPub specification and how to build projects with ActivityPub support.

Based on interviews with key informants on privacy, security, and surveillance, this article explores the relationship between free software and personal digital rights.

Against the dominant capitalist models, free software suggests an economy and society where collaboration rather than competition is the core paradigm and where use value trumps profit maximization. But there’s trouble in paradise.
